A few days ago, I described what makes me — and all freelance writers — entrepreneurial. Working for myself means I handle my own insurance, don’t get employee benefits, and work constantly to grow my business.
So, why freelance? Here are a few of the perks of self employment:
- Freedom: I get to write about what I want for a wide variety of outlets. When my interests change, so can the types of stories I cover.
- Flexibility: If I need to be free on a weekday afternoon, I’ll simply catch up on work during a quiet weekend. I can work from my home office, a coffee shop, or the local co-working space. And, in the summer, I can work from a family vacation spot.
- Job Security: Because I work for several clients at once, it’s impossible for me to be laid off. Losing a big client would certainly hurt, but with enough hustle I can bounce back quickly from the loss.
- Confidence: When you work for yourself, most everything you accomplish is of your own making. It gives me confidence to look back on my five years of full-time freelancing to see how much my business and I have grown.
